Inner Creatures Series, 2017
For my senior show in college I created a series of five oil paintings that were inspired by the human body and the way our organs work. The shapes and functions of some of the most basic human organs inspired me to think about ecosystems and how everything in our bodies works together. These thoughts led me to take these human organs and change them into creatures. As I was painting I reflected on the thyroid a lot. The thyroid controls our hormones which can significantly impact other parts of our bodies. Knowing that my mother had thyroid disease made me think a lot about how our bodies take care of us but can also turn against us. In each painting the thyroid snake is coming into contact with the other creature’s environments, the Thyroid acts as a reminder that everything is connected. The volcano like elements and rock formations reflect on the stability and instability our own bodies can have. The other creatures live quietly in their ecosystems unaware of the changes that will come. I have since continued to add more paintings to this series as I continue to explore this theme in new ways.
